As the credit crunch bites corporate sustainability seems to be taking a back seat both in the media and in our IT strategies. BUT ITS STILL REALLY IMPORTANT !!!!

The question I have for you is this ...
Can a data center be Green, especially if you also take into account the effect on the environment of the devices that the data canter serves?

For example, a telco could create a new headend that has a zero carbon foot print, but the creation of the headend could facilitate another million STB's to be deployed which inturn would burn manny giga watts of power,

Please look into a free demo of Rackwise - the answer is YES. (for demo contact mschmidt@rackwise.com)

The Green Report is a presentation quality dashboard useful in quickly communicating the “green” status of a data center using The Green Grid’s metrics of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE).

The Green Report calculates the PUE and DCiE from an organization’s model of the data center. The report further breaks down top resource consumers by type, servers, network, storage equipment, or other.

The Green Report is an excellent tool when used with RACKWISE DCM’s extensive modeling capabilities to calculate the positive effects of a proposed change to a data center and to determine the DCiE value for a new data center or data center consolidation. Organizations that take measures to go “green” not only save the environment, they will also save energy, which results in significant cost savings
We have been helping many companies "be green' in a number of different ways.

Find out how:

1. Sybase was able to save $262,000 in direct Energy costs, received over $1 Million in Utility Rebates by reducing their Energy Consumption and prevented at least 3 major Outages with Modius.

*DOE case study highlighting Sybase’s implementation of Modius

2. Qualcomm can now run their DC hotter by 6 degrees which equals about $240,000 per year in Energy Savings.

3. Outsourced DC: Modius helps Charles Schwab with Capacity planning: Monitoring and Protecting 10 critical data centers across the U.S. while ensuring Accurate Provisioning & SLA compliance of outsourced partners.

4. Understand how global Data Center customers can now Automatically generate Energy Efficiency Reports and Predict their month to month, year to year, Energy Forecasts.

We have been seeing a trend of data centers to go "Green" at least in their building construction practices and economics of equipment. Most projects can become LEED Certified if the focus is on this requirement at the conceptual stage through construction documents. Few are platinum due to the rigerous requirements of the USGBC and the physical nature of a data center. Zero Carbon footprint is a totally different animal but if you have the capital you can accomplish many good things. Greg
