A colleague owns a facility that was a 28,000+ square foot
satellite uplink facility in Florida. We are researching the
potential of turning it into a data center. He feels the facility has the necessary base requirements such as 1.5 MW generator, two 625 KVA UPS, raised floors, 20+ CRAC HVAC systems, and two separate dedicated fiber optic lines.

Along with all of that the building itself is rated to withstand
hurricanes.

Any thoughts on the viability of this facility to be developed into a profitable Data Center in this challenging economy?

I would say yes, the bad economy is driving small and mid sized companies to partner with Colocation companies in droves. Hosting is where it's at and picking up daily.
William,
There's several things you need to operate a successful datacenter
1. Customers
2. Connectivity
3, Reliable Power
Obviously number one is of primary importance, and to successfully capture business you need to show that you have the following:
1. Compelling pricing
2. Facility Reliability
There's two approaches to selling your services.
1. Convincing the customer management that you are positioned well in the market with the necessary qualifications.
2. Convincing the customer technical team you can provide the necessary reliability, as well as services.

Hi Loy,

Thanks for your inputs. I gave the colleague similar Feedback. Since he is in the construction industry, and I am pretty busy with my present gig, I suggested partnering with a professional Data Center company, such as www.gramtel.com, who already has the talent, expertise, and customer base to pull something like this off and make it a profitable venture.

Your well-written input will help substantiate my views about this structure.

Thanks, again.

Best regards,

Bill
