What are the latest best practices, techniques, or dashboards relating to documenting power and cooling capacity at multiple data centers (international) operated in a central US location?

In the webcast I gave on Friday I tried to get across the changes I'm seeing in both data center processes and the communications with others - both management and platfrom teams. As each environment is different in layout and construction, with different organisational boundaries it makes documenting and presenting capacity difficult to do in any off the shelf standard product.

To document cooling and power you need to assign some design limits - breakers, current, power, BTU and then compare/report/trend against them. Knowing the actual consumption is important, but you have to interpret it in the light of committed power or reserved capability. A good example is a hosting provider who commits to 4kW per rack, but the customer only uses 1kW. You have to really know both and then use this for planning, re-negotiating costs etc.

The few I find who really know their data center have incorporated the IT kit into their planning and documentation system, rather than just finishing at the power strip.
