Has anybody body implemented FCoE?

What are the immediate benefits seen?

What is the down side to using this technology?

I have attached a white paper that i found on the introduction to FCoE in the Data Center. it would be interesting to hear about anybody's implementation.

ummmm ....... take a peek at what cisco is proposing for copper 10G with their new 6100 Series Fabric Interconnects.........

why do you think cisco are not supporting 10GBase-T ?

..........................is this an equipment lock in strategy through cabling like the good old days of bespoke cabling for each manufacturers computer system e.g. IBM twinax, DECnet
I'm going to be attending a training session this Wednesday on Cisco's new Unified Computing System (UCS). It is based on the FCOE concept. From what I've read so far, they're "selling" the FCOE benefit as: Fewer points of management (no HBA's for storage + teamed NICs for server management and regular data traffic), allowing a 40GB uplink through their "FEX" hardware, fewer total cables out the back of the server (less clutter), less power draw, etc. Their UCS servers also have a new proprietary RAM access design that greatly increases RAM I/O speed.

Sounds like a really neat system so far. We'll see how it works on Wednesday!
Hi,

i will be attending a virtual conference tomorrow for the same thing. so it hopefully clarify some of the technology and how implementation will take place.

i'll let you know how it goes on my side as well.

That would be great. It looks like a very nice system. The servers are souped up, and I really like the RAM access scheme they came up with.

How it all ties together through their FEX and Nexus series switches will be interesting to see.

Are you doing the WebEX version?
No it's not a webex. It's completely virtual. if you send me your email address i will forward the email with the link to you and you can register. My email is grant@fe.co.za
