The image here shows a CFD simulation that I carried out in order to identify problems within a small data centre server room. The simulation (or Virtual Facility) includes every item of inventory and serverd to identify several problems with the air delivery.

The absence of blanking plates permits hot air to recirculate - causing hot spots.
The cooling controls allowed some CRAC units to be overworked, whilst others were idle.
Poor positioning of floor grilles allowed conditioned air to be wasted.

Changes have now been made that improve the performance, and resiliance of the facility whilst saving energy costs.
