A Data Centre is a facility designed for providing uninterrupted services to data processing operations. It consolidates information technology resources to enable computerized services, applications and transactions. Whilst saving the maintenance and operation cost, many IT Professionals and Facilities Managers are always challenged with pushing up a Data Centre performance and saving more energy and going green.
Equipment Selection
Power Consumption
Equipments that consume less power or with energy saving mode are preferred.
Electronic Recycling
According to Government in Hong Kong, households throw awaymore than 1.5 million computer and units of electrical and electro equipment annually, which is a lot. Perhaps we can send those equipments to contractors or system integrates for tade-in, at the same time, for refurbishment and reuse in third-worl countries.
Technology Upgrade
This is normally done with ICT Structure. Always ask your vendors how to upgrade the current system to next version. What software or additional hardware are required? Do I just do a simple software upgrade on my hardware?
ICT Design
Less is more!
Our aim is to use the minimum resources to achieve the same or better results. Instead of using 3 boxes of equipment performing routing, firewall and IPS functions, can we have a single box for all three?
Server Virtualisation
It can be considered to improve efficiency and reduce network size. Instead of running 100 servers at an average utilisation rate of 10%, they can be move to 20 servers running a 50%. Therefore, fewer servers and hence less maintenance, rackspace, cooling and fewer switch ports will be required.
Effective Cooling
Cooling for data centre and equipment rooms accounts for most energy consumption for ICT due to its round-the-clock nature. An effective cooling system is critical to minimising energy consumption.
Integrated Building Control
It is important to monitor and control various building system via an integrated building management system (BMS). This requires the integration of various building systems, controls, ICT and communications system to create a "Smart Building". This improve the level of operational energy efficiency and provides real benefits.
