Who is accountable for the power capacity in your data center?

Hi all,

We have been in several hundred data centers over the last few years and have found that different people own power capacity depending on the size and make up of the company. It appears that Data Center Managers most frequently are responsible for power, although there is not always a person with this title.

Who owns power in your data center? Do you have a Data Center Manager, or is it a Facilities Manager, or maybe even an IT responsibility?  As I mentioned, we have been in enough data centers to know that this is not a uniform responsability.

Thanks,

Jason Bailey

In my experience many large organizations have various IT facilities owned by different parts of the business. So these corporate 'data centers' have fragmented responsibility. In most places the facilities team get the power bill and the various data center owners never see a bill, and therefore never worry about reducing their power costs.

In talking to other organizations it seems this is not uncommon.

However, with the various 'green' initiatives happening in many corporations it seems this situation is starting to change, which can only be a good thing.
