Hi Ed. This is a great subject and one to which there are so many great solutions on the market that can either be used in their own right or cobbled together to create an enterprise solution.

Over the last 10 years I've evaluated and installed a number of these and by far the best value for my money if the APC ISX Central suite, which is now able to monitor third party devices as well as pretty much anything from the parent Schneider stable.

At the bare minimum, we should be monitoring power consumption at the UPS, preferably by phase to ensure we're balanced.
Ideally, that should extend out to rack level monitoring for both power consumption and temperature & humidity, although the latter not necessarily in every rack.

The bit where it gets really interesting with many firms, is what they then do with all the data they've collected. I've not seen anyone that capacity plans their physical data centre anywhere near as seriously as they might do with SAN storage, or mainframe MIPS etc. A lot more industry education is needed in this discipline to really get the benefit from any monitoring system.

The bonus with a number of the proprietary systems is pro-active alerting via threshold violation reporting, which can easily plug into any incident management process or system. This can dramatically reduce MTTF and MTTR if thoughfully configured.

The bit that really interests me though, and I'd like to hear what the others in the group are doing, is how we tie realtime environmental monitoring to the control of our air and power delivery infrastructure, to get optimum efficiency and minimum wastage.
The only proprietary system I've seen if HP's Dynamic Smart Cooling, but it's way over-priced and we need competition to drive better solutions.

Good morning! I've joined this group to better understand how and what data center professionals are monitoring from an environmental point of view. Would anyone like to post what they are doing for environmental monitoring and what you envision as environmental monitoring.

If you want to monitor your data center remotely use enVigil networked Video server that is ideal for remotely monitoring the data center from inside the network or outside the network.

See the remote demo from your iphone, pda or just click on the link to see live real time demo.
