The David-Kenneth Group's P90X Approach to Data Center Migrations - Part 1

Perhaps you caught our recent blog post on The P90X Approach to IT Staff Augmentation. We spoke about the need for specialized skills to help you stay on top of your game. If you aren't familiar with P90X here
is a quick refresher - it's the latest exercise/nutrition phenom to hit the infomercial circuit...and it works (take it from me - I'm about 40 days in and loving the results).

How Does P90X Relate to Data Center Migrations and IT Staff Augmentation?

If your company has an IT department, you realize that you need certain talent and specialized skills to stay on top of your game. You don't want to hit a plateau and fall behind the competition. This is much like an exercise regimen (stay ahead of the competition). You need to discover new ways to stay as fit as is appropriate for your
needs/wants. In most cases a Data Center Migration (aka -Transition, Relocation or Consolidation) is a once-in-a-career event for an IT department. If you want to do it right by avoiding downtime, ensuring you build-out or lease the proper space, provide adequate cooling systems, track asset and performance management, etc. for the proper technology infrastructure and supported business operations, then we'll give you a peek into what should take place. We call it our P90X Approach to Data Center Migrations.

When it comes to Data Center Migrations, we believe that a specialized approach with a proven methodology is the best bet for success. How do we know this? We have a proven methodology that has worked well for a variety of clients.

Ramping Up: Project Initialization

Participation is the key. If you want the best results possible, you must collaborate with your internal IT staff as well as your Data Center Migration consulting team to ensure success. Do you have well documented disaster recovery plans, effective resource allocation, sufficient governance models, monitoring and management, and change control programs in place? Don't risk failure. Much like a complete exercise/nutrition program you must mitigate risk with a transparent and collaborative process. Commit to succeed. At The David-Kenneth Group we have a complete set of checklists and discovery questionnaires we complete in partnership with our clients in order to ensure that they enjoy the lasting benefits of a successful Data Center Migration.

Moving Forward: Assessment & Design

A specialized methodology has been defined that fits the needs of your organization. At The David-Kenneth Group we act as your personal trainer; adjusting the Assessment to fit your business model, addressing gaps to mitigate risk. Do the Move Groups make sense? What are the dependencies? Has the Infrastructure readiness been tested? Have all Roles, Responsibilities and Design Assignments been properly allocated?
Are project milestones, scope, governance and business case defined to key stakeholders?

Just like an exercise/nutrition program, a Data Center Migration needs an estimated duration for each phase of the lifecycle in order to meet milestones and objectives on schedule. You can't lose 10 pounds in 3 days (really, you can't and keep it off). You can't migrate your data center without the proper Assessment and a well-developed Plan of Record. What's a Plan of Record? It's the critical piece for successful Deployment and Execution of a Data Center Migration. We'll discuss this more in our next installment on The P90X Approach to Data Center Migrations.
