Having just returned from the Uptime event in NYC I have to admit I saw so very interesting advances in monitoring software. In fact it appears that the monitoring software is merging with asset management software to create and extremely versatile tool set for the data center and facility managers. By merging the two software applications the ability to perform capacity planning in a real time mode is now available. In addition to the capaicity planning I saw some great examples of provisioning of space, power, and network across the entire data center. One package produced graphic work tickets that detail out the deployment of equipment into the data center in a diagrammatic manner. Some of the application allowed the users to develop what-if scenarios to change out hardware within a data center, it even provide list pricing for components for comparison shopping.

Monitoring applications have progressed over the last few years from proprietary systems, to applications that have adapted open protocols for ease of deployment to what I just saw last week. These are awesome advancements that should make the management and tracking of data center hardware and infrastructure components much easier for those assigned to those task.
