What Data Centers and Household Appliances now have in Common

Yes, it is a fact now: your data center is now comparable to fridges, washing machines and microwaves. In what way?

No points if you guessed right: data centers can now earn the Energy Star label as well. It is not very easy though, as only the top 25 of different data centers are allowed to slap the sticker on their front door.

To be honest, it is not fair to compare this Energy Star label with the one on your InDesit or Whirlpool. The Energy Star for data centers is a modified version of the one for buildings. Instead of using 'energy intensity (Watts per square foot) as a metric, the ever present PUE will be the leading figure for which facilities can qualify.

To get a star, your would first of all have to be an American (Europe has its own labels), and enter your data in EPA's software. If you survive that razor, and independent inspector will have to come by to check if you have not been cheated.

Is Energy Star perfect? No. It does not discriminate between good old black coal power and renewable energy sources. Also, power spikes that occur during tests can seriously hamper your chances of getting the star
